Watch a classic musical live at a Madison-area institution. Fort Atkinson is a small, historic town about 45 minutes outside of Madison, and for nearly half a century, the beautiful Fireside Dinner Theater there has been serving delicious meals along with great entertainment. From now to June 9, this entertainment will be Annie Get Your Gun, the fun-filled musical written by three of the biggest names in show business, Richard Rogers, Oscar Hammerstein and Irving Berlin. The musical, which was made into a movie in 1950, contains some of the genre’s most beloved songs, like “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better,” and more. The play is a hilariously entertaining depiction of real-life American icons, like Annie Oakley, Buffalo Bill, and Chief Sitting Bull. Bring the whole family or simply enjoy a night out, with a fabulous dinner (the Friday night fish fry is a local favorite), a time-honored classic production, and afterwards head over to the Fireside’s gift shop, which is a destination unto itself. Visitors can enjoy either a matinee or an evening performance, as well as a midday performance on Sundays. Ticket prices are $67 per adult and $43 for children 14 and younger.

Madison’s public schools have a high caliber art program, and in one of the city’s more unique exhibits, Young at Art displays a wide selection of children’s art. The gallery contains works by young people from kindergarten through grade twelve, up to three works of art per teacher or school. The work displayed has connections to art history and cultural studies according to the schools’ curricula. Enjoy a few hours exploring the works and getting in touch with your inner child at this unique event. Young at Art is a biennial exhibition organized by the school district and the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, and runs from now to May 19. Mailed to Warren anonymously in response to his call for postcard secrets, Warren turned the project into both an art exhibit and eventually the book PostSecret: Extraordinary Confessions from Ordinary Lives, a book that eventually turned him into a New York Times bestselling author and webmaster of an extremely popular online destination. In 1901, the Wisconsin State Legislature passed Chapter 125 Laws that mandated officials to create a memorial in honor of Wisconsin’s role in the Civil War and any other subsequent wars. Civil War veterans banded together to create a vital veterans organization called, “Grand Army of the Republic,” or G.A.R., and the groundwork for the current Wisconsin Veterans Museum was completed. The grand opening occurred on June 6, 1993. It drew a crowd of 7,716 spectators following a publicity campaign involving the governor’s office, legislative leaders, media personalities, and many other influential figures and groups. Today, the museum averages more than 90,000 visitors per year and charges no admission. It is open Tuesday – Saturday from 9:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M.

The Wisconsin Veterans Museum holds more than 3,000 objects on display in modern exhibits. The museum sits on Capitol Square in downtown Madison, WI, where teachers, students, and the general public pass through the doors to experience the living history of Wisconsin’s people, and their impact on the military of the United States of America. Are you a history buff with a love for learning? If so, come out the Wisconsin State Capitol Building for a great lesson in history. The current Capitol was designed by George B. Post & Sons and built between the years of 1906 and 1917. It cost around $7.25 million. The Madison, Wisconsin capitol is unique because it is the only State Capitol built on an isthmus. The Capitol Dome, which soars to a height of 200 feet, features a gilded bronze statue created by Daniel Chester French entitled, “Wisconsin.” 43 varieties of stone from all around world, hand carved furniture, and beautiful glass mosaics adorn the interior. Wisconsin’s diverse ethnic heritage is reflected in the architecture, art, and furnishings throughout the Capitol. The Senate Chamber alone will make your trip worthwhile.

The Capitol building is located at 2 East Main Street in Madison, Wisconsin. Free tours run from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Food carts have long been a part of the downtown Madison lunch scene and as carts become more popular in other places around the country, Madison’s batch has been inspired to showcase a few new trends. The Capitol Square and Library Mall (on the other end of State Street) are home to several food carts serving up lunch during the week and on Saturdays during the Dane County Farmers Market. Many of these carts join with others from around downtown and converge on the Camp Randall area for home Badger games. Here are a couple ideas of carts to try…

There are few more universally loved foods that French fries and downtown Madison has its own food cart devoted to fresh fries with a range of dipping sauces. For now, this cart is right across the street from Inn on the Park so it makes a great place for a quick snack.

Madison is known for its array of ethnic restaurants and this diversity extends to the food carts around the Capitol Square. One of the more popular ethnic carts is Banzo which gets rave reviews for its Mediterranean fare. This cart seems to move around town more than others but is moving up to the Capitol Square in a few days. Be sure to check their website for up to the minute info on their location (banzomadison.com).

Since 1967 the first week of October means cows, cows, and more cows as Madison plays host to the renowned World Dairy Expo. The Expo is Madison’s largest event and brings more than 65,000 agriculture enthusiasts from all over the world to the grounds of the Alliant Energy Center for five days of research, technology and commerce. Each year’s event has a theme that’s carried through the marketing and program materials and, most memorably, through the design of the show ring right down to the color of the shavings on the floor. One of the highlights of the World Dairy Expo is the cattle show where for the last four years a Holstein has won the title of Supreme Champion. We’ll see if the black and white bovine wins again this year and makes it five in a row!
